To be like something/somebody có nghĩa là giống cái gì đó/giống ai đó. ‘Like’ ở đây đóng vai trò là tính từ, có nghĩa khác với ‘like’ được sử dụng dưới dạng động từ . Ví dụ: ‘he likes her’ có nghĩa là ‘anh ấy thích cô ấy’, phân biệt với ‘he is like her’ có nghĩa là ‘anh ấy giống cô ấy’.

Cả câu ‘This love is like fire and ice’ có nghĩa là ‘Tình yêu này giống như nước với lửa’.
